Music producer Phil Spector was transferred this week to the largest and newest state prison in California where he will serve his sentence of 19 years to life for his conviction for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, unless fate intervenes in the form of bail pending his appeal or a reversal of his conviction by a higher court.
Until then, “home” will be California State Prison, Corcoran (“CSP”) as it is officially known—located at 4001 King Avenue, Corcoran, CA 93212.
Spector is being housed in an area of CSP that Department of Corrections officials have dubbed the "sensitive-needs facility" of this newly constructed prison and he has been assigned a single room.
Spector's notoriety probably got him into that housing area, Lt. Stephen Smith told Linda Deutsch, writing for the AP. The typical inmate in the section is a former gang member who has dropped out of a gang and needs protection, Smith said.
Most State Prison inmates in California are allowed to purchase and possess personal items such as a color television, personal music players, paper, pens, and writing materials. However, internet access and cell phones are generally not allowed for security reasons, and both in going and outgoing mail is reviewed by prison staff—with the exception of letters to and from an inmate’s legal counsel of record. (In fact, California inmates are not even allowed to receive emails that have been downloaded and printed by third parties off prison grounds and mailed to the prisoner in question--which ban the California Court of Appeal upheld in 2001.)
We have previously discussed Spector’s most likely prison security classification as a “level III”. CSP is home to Level I, Level III, and more violent inmates—it has no level II.
We infer from what Lt. Stephen Smith told Linda Deutsch as well as our knowledge of the prison classification system that Spector is currently housed in CSP “Facility III-C”—which is described by the CSP level III web page as having “five buildings with a total combined bed capacity of 1,180. III-C is designated as a Sensitive Needs Yard. Current programs in this facility include an Orientation Unit, DPP, DDP, and CCCMS. On June 4, 2007, 200 non-traditional dayroom beds were activated (40 per housing unit).”
The entire III-C Facility (after the gym was converted to a housing unit) currently houses 1,330 inmates.

Hang in there Mr S. ! Hope he's a free man again as soon as possible.
God Bless you Coin Guy--it takes guts to stand up for a person as reviled as Phillip Spector has become--even if based on the principles of a fair trial.
You are certainly no coward, Sir.
It is one thing to stand up and shout the popular slogan or position, quite another to publicly articulate an unpopular cause based on principle. Only the latter takes courage.
Oh brother!
This from the same guy who didn't care that 'PRINCIPLE' and the law of CA demand Susan Atkins be released.
We have posted extensively about the Phillip Spector trial, and will continue to extensively cover the pending appeal, but have tried to stay away from personalities.
We are aware that Rachael Spector (to put it mildly) rubs some people the wrong way, but bear her no animosity--and despite a few (or more than a few) public relations gaffs, we are glad she is there for Phillip Spector.
Prison can be a lonely and terrifying place. Having an attentive wife can have a big impact on that pain. Spector will be eligible for overnight visits and a wife can give a prisoner emotional support that a fan or even a friend cannot.
To those readers who just plain hate Phil Spector, sorry, but we do not.
In addition, Phil Spector made the choice to marry and stay with Rachel. Spector is a very intelligent man and is hardly naive. In addition, he is more than capable of protecting his estate through a prenuptial agreement and other financial safeguards.
Therefore, we are not going to second guess Phillip Spector’s choice of spouse or add more pain to the Spector household.
For these reasons we respectfully decline the invitation of one of our readers to take part in any anti-Rachel Spector movement or writings.
If Phil Spector wants to remain married to her, that is his decision not mine, and if he at any time wants to end the marriage he certainly has the ability to do that also.
A man’s choice of wife is one area where we are just not wiling to intrude—especially when the man in question has far more compelling and gut wrenching issues to deal with than whether his wife tends to put her foot in her mouth from time to time or whether a public with zero knowledge of the private facts and financial agreements views his wife as a “gold-digger”.
Very truly yours,
Blogonaut
We have not mentioned the reports that Phillip Spector was going to be moved to another prison, the reports that the Spector's objected to that decision, and the decision to have PS stay put for now.
For now PS is staying put.
If you wish to write him, his address is:
PHILLIP SPECTOR-G3408-SATF
PO Box 7100
Corcoran, California 93212
Please keep in mind that all inmate mail is opened, inspected, and photocopied.
Please do not send copies of emails; those will be confiscated.
Out of all the freakish criminal cases that have almost become movies in their own right, like OJ, Blake, Polanski... I truly feel the only person who really deserves any respect at all is Phil Spector. I believe that most people sortof confuse him with a celebrity, which he really isn't. He was a big genius with or without us.
I'm sorry... what he imagined and produced is such a purely American and original body of incredible work, and frankly... the way people treat short men is pretty gross. I cannot imagine growing up/being a wildly talented short man and dealing with the family issues he did...
Really, people cannot control themselves when confronted by s short man... I say this after years of shooting portraits of jockeys — I am the first person in the history of the sport to do that, and it taught me alot.
They just can't help themselves. It's like being an ugly chick. Every day you are gonna hear something or see something (when noone is around to hear it of course, or even if others are around!) designed to mock you... basically for no real reason except most people have these twisted hardwired completely irrational fetishes for tall people. He didn't have a chance. If you are gonna ignore that then you are just an insensitive creep.
As far as the trial goes... it just is hard for me to believe that he could have shot someone intra-orally, and not have blood and matter and GSR on the cuff/sleeve of his jacket. Even if he did it I am so sick of people acting like he is just a freak after gobbling up his gorgeous songs for decades, and laughing at what he has said sometimes... about how great he is. He IS great. Forcing someone to blow their own horn because you refuse to applaud them yourself... is more common than most would like to think.
You are thought to be just as crazy as PS himself if you stand up for him. It's Playground 101. Popularity.
We ourselves are just as guilty as him, maybe moreso. My op. An mean-spirited in nature to begin with. TO BOTH LANA CLARKSON AND PHIL SPECTOR. I mean, she was unhappy because her age made her undesirable... they are both two sides to the same coin that is our currency.
